The trucking industry has been the focus of law enforcement for many years. Recently, there has been a trend to announce a special focus week. Some agency, usually the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), will determine a week in June and a particular violation type to address.
Annual International Road Check
This year, from June 4 through June 6, roadside inspections will focus on brakes as the 2019 Roadcheck. Our drivers and garage technicians were alerted earlier, and we should weather this storm well.
Unaware that Dot Transportation, Inc. (DTI) drivers focus on safety every day, CVSA will occasionally determine that two weeks of safety focus are needed, and 2019 will be one of the double-up years.
Operation Safe Driver
It has been announced that July 14 through July 20 is “Operation Safe Driver.” The focus in July will be on all CVSA Unsafe Driving violations. This will encompass all moving violations, including seat belts and handheld devices.
The specific target will be on speeding. They cite several statistics about the issues with speeding, including:
- In 2017, 26 percent of all fatalities had speeding as a contributing factor
- In the last two decades, 33 percent of all accidents involve speeding
- In our industry, the most frequent predictor and driver-related crash factor is speeding
In my 21 years of experience with DTI, I have seen that our drivers are more careful than most of the industry. However, everyone can slip. For the particular dates listed, please maintain focus and stay vigilant, as law enforcement will be focused on you.
Heads up and tighten up. They will be watching.
