Congratulations! You’ve already made the choice to hit the road and become a truck driver. You’re on your way to beginning an exciting and fulfilling career.

But now that you’ve decided to work toward this goal, where do you begin?

Choosing Between Truck Driving Schools

It’s time to pick a truck driving school, but not just any school – the best possible one that fits your lifestyle and career. There are many driving schools out there, and it can be overwhelming trying to determine which training program most closely matches your needs and goals. Here are some tips and things for you to consider when choosing.

Is it legit?

You can learn a lot about a truck driver training program by asking people who are familiar with it. They’ll give you unbiased feedback that you can rely on. Also consider the school’s accreditations, certificates and length of time in business. And remember, there’s no better way to get a feel for the school than to stop in and see it for yourself. Talk to the staff, see the facilities and compare it to other schools.

Am I going to be a small fish in a big pond?

The number of instructors and the number of tractors available to each student are important. The more one-on-one time you have with instructors and designated tractors is going to mean a better experience and education for you. Ask the school’s staff directly about these ratios.

How am I going to pay for it?

The price tag on truck driving school is often the top factor in someone’s decision to go. Take a look at the total cost and financing options provided by the school. Plus, check out the companies they can place you wish to see if there are repayment options. You may also find some schools that pay you to attend, whether through scholarships, grants or other forms of financial aid.

Am I going to get hired when I’m done?

Part of choosing the right driving school is to consider the jobs they can place you with afterward. Look into their history for job placement, success rates and companies. Each school should be able to provide you with up-to-date data showing what percentage of graduates got jobs and where.

Best of luck on your truck driving education and exciting career!
